Street Market in Wanchai - Tai Yuen Street

Directions: exit from Wanchai MTR exit A3, cross Johnston Road and Tai Yuen Street is one of the street perpendicular to Johnston Road nearby.

History of Tai Yuen Street

Tai Yuen Street exists for more than half decade.  There are stalls that are run by several generations of the same family so it's more than just an open market.  It witnesses the changes of Wanchai.  Since the closing down of "L:ee Tung Street"' (also known as "Wedding Invitation Card Street) due to the redevelopment by Urban Renewal Authority, people worried that Tai Yuen Street may face the same fate.

By 2006, there was strong debate about the future of Tai Yuen Street.  In government's original plan, they want to move all 156 fixed stalls into a new market.  After much protest and negotiation, government insisted that half of the stalls, that is 86 stalls that were located at Tai Yuen Street South and Cross Street East had to move while the rest remains.

What to Buy in Tai Yuen Street

Tai Yuen Street is also known as "Toy Street" because in the 90s, a few toy shops open there.  Some are specialized in models too so this attracts many people come all the way to Tai Yuen Street for new or old models.

Besides toys and models, some stalls are seasonal too.  When Chinese New Year is coming, you can see CNY specific flowers, lucky notes, red lanterns and all other CNY related decorations, including the red ribbon with blessing characters that's used to decorate the narcissus. The week before Christmas, they sell Christmas decorations and party outfits and accessories are all on sale when Halloween is coming.
